“Use The Eyes Of Your Heart!”(Eph. 5:11-14).
“Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. That is why it is said: ‘Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.'”
We remind ourselves that when Jesus came the prophecy through Isaiah was fulfilled: “…the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned…”(Mt.4:16).
Again it is said, “In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in darkness, but the darkness has not understood it”(Jn.1:4-5).
O yes, it is a dark world and what makes it so is that the heart is not visible to human view. And it is difficult to read the heart through the eyes.
To be in the light of Christ is the other way round: Seeing through the eyes of the heart. The heart is the seat of imagination and the eye of the heart can see what the brain cannot understand and perceive what cannot be grasped through logic.
Emotions and feelings are visible only to the heart. While normal eyes see only the physical state of something, the eyes of the heart is able to view the emotional state, such as, love, care, truthfulness, faithfulness, affection, etc.
This explains why Paul is asking us sleepers to wake up, rise from the dead so that Christ will shine on us. In other words, “use the eyes of your heart and you will see what your two eyes cannot see.” This is spiritual awakening.
Most times we do not see what we think we have seen when we say, “Oh I see…” In this regard Jesus says, “See to it then that the light within you is not darkness…”(Lk.11:33-36).
The eyes of the heart abhors the works of darkness. While your physical eyes can lead you into sin, the eyes of your heart leads you away from sin. when Christ shines on us, the shameful deeds of darkness gets exposed.
Dear friend, neither you nor I can be bold to cast the first stone. Paul is very much aware of this. That is why he says we should wake up and rise from the dead so that Christ will shine on us.
We are children of light and “…the fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth…”
Sunday prayer:Holy Spirit illuminate my inner being so that I can see with the eyes of my heart. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
