“Let Us Return To The LORD!”(Jer.8:8-11).
Established churches are growing by geometric proportions as membership in congregations increases and new congregations are founded. Sectarianism has become a new normal helping in the expansion of church growth. This is the “church test” we can use to determine the presence of Christ among our people.
However, numerical growth without commensurate spiritual growth is tantamount to a mere claim that “we are wise, for we have the law of the LORD, when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely.”
This is quite evident in falling and failing standards, double standards, and the nonchalance about standards at all.
At present, none of us is absolved of the LORD’S indictment! “From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit.”
There is a serious problem when we dismiss a problem with a wave of the hand saying that “there is no problem in the problem!”
The LORD says the problem is with the scribes, the prophets, and the priests – including everybody by any title who is a messenger of the gospel. The scribes or biblical scholars who dish out deliberate misinterpretation of scriptures, twisting its truth to suit their goals. The prophets who ought to speak truth to the powers that be and tell them the truth instead dress the people’s wounds as though the wounds were not serious! The priests who have to work at the altar of sacrifice ask more for their benefits than to serve the needs of the people.
In the midst of chaos, confusion and war servants of the LORD are shouting “Peace, peace,” instead of saying, “We want peace to be restored!”
The LORD is pained by our hardheartedness, and He wonders: “… ‘When people fall down, do they not get up? When someone turns away, do they not return? Why then have these people turned away?…They cling to deceit; they refuse to return.”(Jer.8:4-5).
Dear country people, it is no excuse to compare and say we are better or are even among the best. No! God is concerned about our well-being, and he hates our apostasy! Let us not become too comfortable and begin to think that God is a frail old man or a toothless bulldog. No!
If we do not repent, then “the wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and trapped…” When we reject the word of God, we cannot claim to be wise. God says of those who claim to be wise that he will give their wives to other men and their fields to new owners!
The All Anglophone Conference, the Grand Dèbate or National Dialogue, et al, all aimed at bringing people to a roundtable for our collective good. If we as a people must return to the LORD, we need a national forum that will bring all denominations together to brainstorm on how to “Keep God.”
Meanwhile, society is a reflection of the individual, let each one of us remove the log from our own eyes, before we can see the speck in others’ eyes!
Prayer: Holy Spirit, prompt me daily to walk the talk through thoughts, words, and deeds that return me to the LORD. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
