“Seek The Great Teacher, Preacher And Healer!”
Modern day Christian churches in Africa consider the opening of schools as a fulfilment of the teaching ministry. This is quite a misnomer hinging from the missionary strategy which considered school as an evangelistic strategy.
The outcome has been that school has failed to teach the full knowledge of Christ to pupils and students as Religious Knowledge is only a subject among many secular subjects. And most times teachers seek employment just to eke out a living and not knowing much about Jesus Christ themselves.
On the other hand Christian education is lacking in the congregations on two counts. Sometimes ministers think Bible study is overburdening, but most times it is because Christians hide under the pretext of their tight schedules and wouldn’t come for Bible study. This has a negative repercussion on christian ethics and the end result is an overwhelming warped consciences leading to intentional moral decadence.
According to Luke Jesus began his ministry in Nazareth, but the people drove him away, so he went to Capernaum where he began to teach the people in the synagogue on the Sabbath. People “were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority.
His teaching was interrupted by a demon-possessed man. The demon recognised Jesus as “the Holy One of God.” The demon asked, “What do you want with us…? Have you come to destroy us?” In other words the demon was asking, “Jesus, we left heaven for you and came to seek shelter here on earth. Why are you still pursuing us?”
Jesus responded sternly, “Be quiet! Come out of him!” And it happened! The people’s response indicate that they considered the driving out of the demon as a demonstration and continuation of the teaching as they said to each other, “What is this teaching? With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits and they come out!”(Lk.4:31-37).
The lesson here is that we shouldn’t undermine the teaching aspect of the word. Teaching opens up the mind to understanding. This is what is considered as “faith seeking understanding.”
Matthew summarises the ministry of Jesus as threefold: “Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in the synagogues, preaching the goodnews of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people”(4:23). Jesus is the same today, yesterday and for ever; come to him with faith for learning and you will gain wisdom. Come to him with faith with your sickness and troubles and receive what you ask.
Weekend prayer: Lord Jesus Christ I come to you in faith. Through the Holy Spirit be my teacher, my preacher and my healer. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
