“Living Under Grace!”(Titus:2:11-14).
Titus and the two letters to Timothy constitute what has come to be called “The pastoral letters.” Both Titus and Timothy were young ministers whom Paul dotted for their zeal and commitment to the gospel.
Titus, a letter of three chapters has had so much influence when it comes to the selection of leaders in the church. Paul writes that the reason he left Titus in Crete was that he “might strengthen what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as” he Paul had directed. He then goes on to give the characteristic requirements of who an Elder must be(Titus 1:5ff).
The pericope for today’s meditation is a classic summary for Christian living. The passage describes in brief the effect which grace should have on believers. It encourages rejection of ungodliness and leads to holier living. This is in keeping with Paul’s repeated insistence that profession of Christ must be accompanied by godly living.
“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope – the glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who gave himself to redeem us from wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.”
Having just celebrated the birth of Christ Jesus we are already being reminded of his death and his soon to come again. Inbetween now and the time of his coming we must live lives that says “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives.” The death of Christ Jesus was to “redeem us from wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.”
My friend, doing what is good should not happen by chance. We should be eager to do what is good. It is good to be good. It is good to do good. And it is good to be eager to do what is good.
Prayer: Holy Spirit help me daily to be good, to do good and be eager to do what is good.
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
Rev Babila Fochang.
