“Be Humbled If You Are Among The Remnants!”
Join me to pay hommage to one of the humblest professors who impacted my reasoning. I mean Prof Andrew F. Walls who has just transited to glory. Prof, may you enjoy deep fellowship with your mentee, Prof. Kwame Bediako, my own mentor and those other great men we met through their books and you guys talking and writing much about them. They include Profs. E. Bolaji Idowu, Byang Kato, John S. Mbiti and Lamin O. Sanneh.
Of all the above, Prof. Walls alone was not an African, but having been a missionary in Africa for a long time he wrote so passionately about the theological agenda and religious itinerary of Africans. Great servant of the Most High, journey well and stay well in that eternal home.
Among those named above, Kato was a true Evangelical whose life on earth was the briefest of all. In his PhD thesis “Theological Pitfalls in Africa,” Kato challenged the faith of the pioneer gurus, Bolaji Idowu and John Mbiti for talking positively about African traditional religion. Idowu insisted that the Yoruba God Olodumarè is a supreme deity and advocated strongly for an indigenous African church because the church in Africa was too western to be called African. On his part Mbiti emphasised that African traditional religion served as preparatory ground for Christianity because even in Africa God did not leave himself without a witness.
Who are we mere mortals to determine with firm conviction those who are saved and those who go to hell? Once upon a time there were those Gentiles who considered that God had spit out Israel like bad egg in the mouth in favour of Gentiles.
Paul reminded them that “God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew.”
We shouldn’t be too quick to think that some people are not candidates for heaven. In a conversation last evening a friend said, maybe those political octogenarians we wish dead are good people in God’s eyes. Otherwise why is it that no matter our cries, the people are still in power and waxing strong!
We must not undermine grace! It is in this line that Paul writes, “So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.”
We are all living in days of grace. When God favours you over another person today, do not become proud and arrogant. God simply wants to teach a lesson. What others sought so earnestly, they did not get, “but the elect did,” otherwise “grace would no longer be grace!”
My friend, as you work out your salvation each day do not stop thanking God for his grace that does not disciminate. Do not be an Elijah to think that you alone are the only true worshipper. By his grace the Lord has reserved for himself many more than we think (Rom.11:1-15). There is always a remnant selected by grace. Pray to be among them by obedience to God’s commands.
Weekend prayer: Lord Jesus Christ thank you for being God’s grace through which I am counted among the elected of the Father’s reserve. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
Babila Fochang.
