“Be To God The Aroma Of Christ…!”(2 Cor.2:14-16).
The five basic human senses that we are familiar with are sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. Each of the senses can be a live-saver if properly used. We can also abuse its use to our own destruction.
Sight has physical benefits but is not helpful in our spiritual walk. We walk by faith and not by sight.
We may walk by faith and not by sight, but “faith comes from hearing the message, and the message comes through preaching Christ”(Rom.10:17).
The psalmist asks us to “taste” and see that the LORD is good…”(34:8).
In today’s text, Paul says, “we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ…”
During Jesus’ earthly ministry, his gentle touch brought healing to many.
As we said earlier, the application of our senses can be beneficial as well as detrimental.
Our focus is on the sense of smell. Christians are like captives brought home by a conqueror being led in a triumphant procession. In our case, God is the one leading us and using “us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.”
Aroma is used for a fragrant scent pleasing to the nose. We often appreciate a scent by saying, “This smells good.” Aroma is sometimes distinguished from odour that is foul-smelling.
That notwithstanding, aroma in the contest of the text is neuter as it can be life-saving or destructive. To the people who are perishing(those who deride the gospel) the aroma of Christ (the gospel) brings death. To those who are being saved(those who believe the gospel), it is “an aroma that brings life.”
Even after we have spread the aroma of Christ to the world, it is not in our power to determine those who are being saved or perishing. “We are not competent “in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God”(2 Cor.3:4-5).
The Holy Spirit, whom we await to celebrate tomorrow, leads us into all truths.
While we are in this journey of faith, let us strive to be what it takes to be an aroma of Christ in the world.
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit, guide me daily to be to God a veritable aroma of Christ to all. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
