“Do Not Stubbornly Refuse The Testimony Of Eyewitnesses!”
We have often focused our attention on Thomas for denying the testimony of those who saw the risen Lord. He said he wasn’t going to believe until he himself saw Jesus and touched the nail marks and the wound on his side.
But he was not the only one who disbelieved the resurrection of the Lord. When Mary Magdalene who first saw the risen Lord told the rest, “they did not believe it.” Jesus later appeared to two disciples who were walking in the country. “They returned and reported it to the rest; but they did not believe them either.”
It is then that Jesus appeared to the Eleven and “rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.”
If the Eleven who had been with Jesus all through his ministry, listening to his teachings could lack faith and exhibited stubborn refusal to believe the testimony of eyewitnesses, how much more can it be so in our generation who know only the Christ of faith!
We walk by faith and not by sight. The risen Lord appears even to us in this generation. We can always see him with the eyes of faith as we accept the testimony of those who have seen him.
It is not enough to believe him. What we have experienced must be transmitted to others. The commission of the risen Lord to the Eleven is also to us: “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned”(Mk.16:9-16). This “all the world” begins in your little corner.
Firstly, believe and doubt not. Secondly spread the news to others so that none should perish! Be your brother’s keeper.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ help my unbelief and let me always be a harbinger of the gospel in word and deed. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
