“Turn Away From Gods That Can’t Save!”(Judg.10:6-18).
One of my lecturers said in these days of hi-tech it is perhaps the right time for God to show himself the way he is at the moment. Idolatory and apostacy is a “byproduct of human cognitive wiring and the natural search for tangible meaning.”
The Byzantine empire faced a turbulent period (726-843 AD) in what was dubbed “The Iconoclastic Age.” There was a fierce theological and political debate over the use of religious images(icons). There was a societal rift between the iconoclasts(image breakers who said icons are idolatory) and iconophiles(image lovers who venerated them).
The love of icons is syncretism and, at worst, idolatory! The Decalogue forbids idolatory and apostacy to those whom God calls his own.
We must not see God face to face before believing that he is real. Scriptures say there is no excuse because everywhere in the world, God has revealed himself through creation(Rom.1:20).
When we believers turn to other gods and forsake the LORD, he becomes angry and brings disaster upon us. When we come to our senses, we must cry out to the LORD: “We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving” the idols.
We serve and believe a compassionate God; slow to anger and ready to forgive. True repentance desirous of the LORD’S forgiveness requires that we get rid of the gods among us and serve the LORD. When we do this, the LORD will no longer bear our misery. The LORD will not ignore the cry for mercy of a genuinely penitent heart!
My friend, whatever god it is that you are depending on now, leave it and return to the LORD and cry for mercy. The LORD can no longer ignore your cry for mercy! The gods can’t save you; only God can.
Prayer: LORD, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
