“The Lord Has Taken Away Your Sin!”
In one of their dirges my people sing, “The big fishes swallow the small ones.” it is sadly a daily occurence for the high and mighty to abuse their power in the way they treat the powerless.
King David was one such blessed monarch to whom God had given so much and would still have given more, if David had asked. David was not contented and had to lust for Bathsheba, the lone wife of his subject Uriah. He did not end there! He asked that they should send Uriah to where the battle was thickest where he was killed. When Uriah died David married his widow.
It is then that the Lord sent Nathan the prophet who spoke truth to power by addressing the matter with wisdom and understanding through a parable. David condemned himself when he condemned the imaginary rich man of Nathan’s story.
Nathan told the king, “You are the man!” (II Sam.12:1-10&13-15).
The main thrust of the story in parallel with the week’s focus is sin, acknowlegment of sin, punishment, repentance and God’s forgiveness.
It has been writren of David, “For David had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord and had not failed to keep any of the Lord’s commands all the days of his life – except in the case of Uriah the Hittite”(I Kgs.15:5). This one sin remained a permanent stain on David’s life.
This attracted a punishment from God. True to the saying that those who live by the sword perish by the sword, that is how it happened to David. The prophet told him, “You struck down Uriah… with the sword and took his wife…You killed him with the sword…Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house…” And that’s how David lost three of his sons. Amnon, Absalom and Adonijah died violently (cf. II Sam.13: 28-29, II Sam.18:14-15, I Kgs 2:25). Apart from these, after the prophecy the Lord killed the child born to David by Uriah’s wife.
Like I said earlier, this is the focus of the text for the week’s meditation:

  1. David confessed his sin. “I have sinned against the Lord.” “I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me”(Ps,51:4).
  2. The Lord’s forgiveness as pronounced through the prophet: “The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die…”
David recognized God’s forgiveness: “Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. “I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’ – and you forgave the guilt of my sin”(Ps,32:1&5).
My friend, what is that abominable act you have committed? Pour it out to the Lord and enjoy the blessedness of his compassion. The Lord has sacrificed his Son Jesus Christ because of that sin. And the Son says, “…whoever comes to me I will never drive away”(Jn.6:37).
Seek the face of God and live by his mercy and grace.
Prayer: Thank you Lord for taking away my sin through the blood of Jesus Christ. Keep me away from presumptuous sins. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
