“Spirit Of My Father, Speak Through Me!”
The world is hostile to the message of hope and salvation through Jesus Christ. These hostilities may manifest in very subtle ways, but occasionally its ugly head pops up visibly.
Jesus knows that to be his representation as light is like sending sheep among wolves. After all life is about taking risks because “nothing ventured, nothing gained.”
When messengers of the gospel face persecution they shouldn’t worry so much about what they will say. The Spirit of God will speak for them. This is not to say we have to be nonchalant and careless because the Spirit will speak through us. We must be on our guard against men.
Jesus warns, “Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves” (Mtt.10:16-20). Interestingly the snake who is always considered a bad egg is considered positively here. To be shrewd is “having or showing sharp powers of judgment…” This is to say the Spirit does not just speak through us; we must have sharp powers of judgment while being innocent of the accusations levied against us as we stand in defense of the faith.
God through the Spirit gives us what to say and when to say it. Luke puts it nicely: “But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict” (Lk.21:14-15).
My friend, it does not mean that when the Spirit speaks through you, your persecutors are gojng to let you be! The Spirit speaks through you in that it gives you opportunity to continue to witness to the gospel before the very governors and kings who challenge the gospel.
Yes, the Spirit of the Father will speak through you, but even so, “…be as shrewd as a snake and as innocent as a dove.” Above all, “Be on your guard against men…”
Weekend prayer: Father let your Spirit speak through me when I face persecution for witnessing to the gospel. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
