“Lord Jesus Christ, I Believe That You Are The Son Of God!”
Jesus had to convice Thomas by asking him to put his finger in his side to confirm that he was the risen Lord. When Thomas did this he called Jesus, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed”(Jn.20:24-30).
If Thomas who was one of the inner circle of twelve wanted to see before believing, how much more could it have been difficult for ordinary folks! Our faith in Christ the risen Lord must not be based on having seen him in the physical. We walk by faith not by sight.
We begin to believe that Jesus is the Christ only when we are born of God. Remember he was accused of blasphemy and killed because he said he was the Messiah (Christ)!
Africans know what family bonds are. If you love a father you must love his child too. Within the family love between siblings cannot be gainsaid. Last evening my daughter-in-law was telling me of a family of four brothers who do all their things as family. That is typical of the African family as a nucleus of society.
The Christian community is our new family bonded in love.
We show in practical terms that we love the children of God by obeying God’s commands which are not burdensome. It is not burdensome because the moment you are born again you become an overcomer. To overcome the world is to gain victory over the sinful pattern of the world. It is possible for believers to obey God because they have been born again and the Holy Spirit lives within them and gives them strength.
There are two aspects of victory:
The initial victory of turning in faith from the world to God.
And secondly the continuing day-by-day victory of Christian living.
John still raises the fundamental question: “Who is it that overcomes the world?” It’s not a quiz, so his response: “Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God “(I Jn.5:1-5).
My friend be an overcomer by believing in Jesus as the Son of God. Obey God by loving members of the household of God. Be sensitive to the needs and concerns of those around you and try to be their destiny helper where and when you can.
Sunday prayer: Holy Spirit be my guide in my continuing day-by-day victory in my Christian living. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
