“Do Not Be Afraid To Help: The LORD Will Replenish You Abundantly!”(I Kgs.17:7-16).
Dear LORD, we go out in the confidence that if you do not build the house, our labour will be wasted(Ps.127:1).
Yesterday, a friend inboxed me expressing the worry about our emphasis that the ravens that fed Elijah were actually scavenger birds. She said she had always understood the ravens of the story to be angels.
An angel is a divine messenger – form notwithstanding. If the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity could take the form of a dove(Mk.1:10) and tongues of fire(Acts 2:3), why wouldn’t ravens be messengers too!
Miracles, even when they are extraordinary and supernatural, still involve ordinary and natural elements. The miracle is in the way the ordinary manifests extraordinarily.
The brook that provided water to Elijah in his hideout eventually dried up in the same way that the manna and quails that fell from heaven eventually stopped.
Elijah had a taste of the drought and famine he gladly invoked on the people. God is not a respecter of persons! The LORD told Elijah to go to a widow in Zarephath where B&B had been prepared for Elijah. Even though the LORD told Elijah that he had commanded the widow to feed Elijah, it appears the widow was not informed.
However, the widow was a vessel that was ready to be used as she obeyed Elijah and did everything he asked her to do. She had enough flour and oil to bake the last meal for herself and her son to eat and then wait for death.
Elijah assured her, “Don’t be afraid.” Go home and do as you have said. But first, make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel says, ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain in the land.'”
This is exactly how it happened “in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah.”
The LORD our God is faithful and keeps to his promises. The jars of those who act on his word without questioning do not run out of flour and oil in times of dire need.
Again, we see that the LORD uses what is always there to perform the miraculous. The jars, flour, and oil are ordinary but miraculously transformed into the extraordinary.
The widow by an act of faith received the blessings of the LORD whose covenant Israel had abandoned for Baal and Asherah in pursuit of prosperity. While the covenant people rejected their God and were being punished, this non-Israelite widow was miraculously provided for because of an act of faith.
Today, the younger generation abandon the covenant LORD and plunge themselves into esoteric fraternities where they gain instant wealth, prosperity, and power at the expense of their souls!
Sad to say, it is an aberration to tag this on youths alone because even those who are near their graves still think that the LORD God is dead, or at best, he is a powerless old man!
Sometimes, we are too cautious and do not want to give a bit of the little we have to others. We think it is too small to share because it is not even enough for us. By such denial to share, we end up missing out on a bigger blessing that would’ve multiplied for us through that little assistance to someone.
My friend, when you are asked to share the little you have with somebody, “do not be afraid” to do so. “The demand of the covenant is not given without the promise of the covenant. The LORD does not ask more than he promises to give.”
In family meetings, church groups, WhatsApp groups, etc when a call is made to assist a bereaved member or the family of a deceased member, or sick member, do not hesitate to give. What you give may become your “Sea never dry” because “What you radiate is what you attract!”
Prayer: Holy Spirit, increase in me the willingness and readiness to help someone in need. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
