“Do Not Abuse Your Freedom In Christ!”
Paul addressed the Christians of Galatia, “You foolish Galatians!” It is not as if they were mentally deficient, rather they simply failed to use their powers of perception. They allowed themselves to be swept off their feet by false teachers who insisted that full conversion included circumcision as per the Old Testament. (The issue of circumcision may not mean much to majority African tribes because circumcision had already been part of their cultures).
Paul says “Christ has set us free;” meaning believers are free from the yoke of the law.
If we try to justify our faith by the law we alienate ourselves from Christ and as such we fall away from grace. Rather, “by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope.” When we are “in Christ Jesus neither circumcission nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love”(Gal.5:1-6).
My friend, faith is not mere intellectual assent(cf.Jm.2:18-19). Faith is a living trust in God’s grace that expresses itself in acts of love. In other words, it is work produced by faith, labour prompted by love and endurance inspired by hope in the Lord Jesus Christ (cf.I Th.1:3).
Bottomline is we have freedom in Christ who has set us free from the yoke of the law. We should stop the bickerings of strict compliances because the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. In other words, “Be one another’s keeper!”
Prayer: Holy Spirit help me not to be alienated from Christ and fall away from grace. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
