“Conversion: When Doubt Transforms To A Confession Of Faith!”(Mk.15:37-41).
“With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, ‘Surely this man was the Son of God!’…”
In the 17th century, the French philosopher René Descartes coined the famous statement “Cogito ergo sum” (I think(doubt), therefore, I exist. According to Descartes, “the very act of thinking or doubting one’s existence is undeniable proof that you exist as a conscious being doing the thinking.”
Theologically doubt is not unbelief. Doubt is the mind asking questions and struggling to comprehend, which is a normal element of growth.
We have gotten used to seeing Thomas as the only one who doubted that the Lord was risen. However, the ministry of Jesus was characterised by the religious leaders and the people doubting his identity as the Son of God or the Messiah. Each time the religious leaders accused Jesus of blasphemy, they doubted his claims of his identity. Each time the question was asked, “Could this be the Messiah?,” it was mitigated by doubt.
Doubt makes us think. Thinking generates questions, and questioning is a search for truth.
Standing at the foot of the cross, watching and hearing the agonising cry of Jesus as he breathed his last, assailed the centurion of his doubts. From that moment, every doubt that he harboured within dissipated. At that very moment, the centurion was converted, and he made one of the most powerful “statements of faith:” “Surely this man was the Son of God!”
We humble ourselves at the foot of the cross, with our worries and doubts. We are not faithless because we doubt. Our doubt is *”Faith seeking understanding.” We are not going to discern spiritual truths if we do not doubt. But at the foot of the cross the agonising cry of Jesus and his last breath and the immediate happenings sweeps away our doubts and fill us with the truth of who Jesus is and what he has done for us.
This revelation of the purpose of Jesus’ death was how, at his last breath, “the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”
The tearing of the temple curtain symbolised “the removal of the barrier between God and humanity.” This was a divine act whereby access to God has been granted to all humanity. While the church is a place of fellowship and prayers, access to the Holy of Holies is now open to everyone.
The Holy of Holies is no longer in the temple or church; it is everywhere. It is available to people who worship God in spirit and truth for God is Spirit.
My friend, are you thinking? Are you doubting? It means you exist and are searching for truth! Behold the man of Calvary is the pinnacle of truth. Come to him, and your doubts will transform into a profound confession of faith! Hallelujah!
Weekend prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, glory be to you, Son of God, for transforming my doubts into a Confession Of Faith. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
