“Be Filled With The Holy Spirit!”(Acts 4:23-31).
The book of Acts is often called “Acts of the Holy Spirit,” instead of “Acts of the Apostles.”
The Holy Spirit is the driving force behind the birth, growth, and expansion of the early Church. The apostles only acted with the supernatural force, guidance, and direction of the Holy Spirit.
Yesterday, we read how Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, testified for the risen Lord without fearing for his life.
After their release, Peter and John went back to the rest and reported what had happened to them. Upon hearing this, “they raised their voices together in prayer to God… After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”
What happened was a response to the content of their prayer. In the prayer, they asked God to consider the threats of those who conspire against the word of God – even though the enemies of the gospel only did what God’s power and will had decided beforehand. Then they made this request: “Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your Holy servant Jesus.”
We note here that while we take this week to celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, we are also being prepared for the celebration of “Sunday of the Holy Trinity” on Sunday coming – (to be explained on Sunday). Suffice to point out how the prayer of the apostles referred to the Holy Trinity: The disciples prayed to God requesting boldness to proclaim the gospel and to give them miraculous power to perform signs and wonders. They asked God to grant their request in the name of his holy servant Jesus.
God’s response was immediate! “The place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”
When we pray to the Father through the Son, he answers us by filling us with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit empowers us, emboldens us, guides us into God’s yet-to-be-known truth, and reminds us of Christ’s teachings and commands that we may have ignored or forgotten. Above all, in a world with many claimant voices shouting to be heard, the Holy Spirit is there to fill us so that we should stand up for Christ who has secured our eternity and our present well-being! Hallelujah!
Prayer: Father, fill us with the Holy Spirit so that our testimony for Christ should be in word and deed. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
