“Call On The Name Of The Lord And Be Saved!”
As we continue to reflect on the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, let us put in a word for women in ministry. For too long Christianity thrived on the traditions of patriarchy. As such within some circles of Christianity women are still refused the privelage of becoming ministers of the word.
On Pentecost day when some made fun that the apostles had had too much wine, Peter and the Eleven stood up. Peter told the people that what they just witnessed was the fulfilment of what the prophet Joel had spoken:
“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy…Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy…And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”(Acts2:14-21).
The prophesy of Joel challenged patriarchy and male chavinism. When the Holy Spirit comes on both men and women they all prophesy. Importantly is that no-one is going to be saved by being a parasite of another person. On the contrary, “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved!” To call on the name of the Lord is to shun evil and obey fully the commands of the Lord.
Paul told the “foolish Galatians,” “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Yes, we are all “heirs according to the promise”(Gal.3:1&28-29).
Let us all enjoy the benefits of the Holy Spirit equitably without discrimination on the basis of gender, social positioning, race or colour.
Prayer: Holy Spirit enable both sons and daughters to prophesy so that many will call on the name of the Lord and be saved. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
