“We Are Overcomers!”
“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God…”(I Jn.5:4-10).
What may quickly come to mind is that the moment we believe that Jesus is the Son of God life becomes smooth sailing. We automatically become achievers because we have overcome all the obstacles that blocked our way to success.
In its rightful context to overcome the world is to gain victory over the world’s sinful pattern of life. In other words it is to show obedience to God.
To the believer obedience to God is not impossible because they have been born again and so the Holy Spirit dwells within them and gives them strength. When we turn in faith from the world to God we have won the initial victory, and also the continuing day-by-day victory of Christian living.
The context in which John wrote this letter was similar to what is going on with regard to Christian beliefs. So many voices raising their tones to be heard; yet dishing out half-truths and half-gospels. It has been the same story since from the early church, and may explain why you hear names like, Full Gospel, True Church of Christ, Overcomers, Born Again, True Church of God, etc!
These may have been intended to bring purity and sanity to what may have been seen to be deviations, but with time each grows their own false teachers.
This is why it is important to believe that Jesus is the Son of God in order to overcome. His baptism and his blood spilled on the cross are testimonies that he is both God and Man from the day he descended from heaven. The Holy Spirit comes as the third and most powerful witness. He descended on Jesus at his baptism and he continues to confirm in the hearts of believers the apostolic testimony that the baptism and death of Jesus affirm that he is the Messiah, the Son of God.
My friend, it does not count on which platform you are standing; what matters is that you believe that Jesus is the Son of God. By believing you become an overcomer as you turn your back to the standards of the world and turn yourself to God in full obedience to him.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ hold my hand as I turn my back to the world and fix my focus on the cross. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
