“A Glimpse Of The Glory Of God!”(Ez.1:4-6&22-28).
Prophet Ezekiel was among those who were taken into the Babylonian captivity in c 597 BC. He was a priest, born into a priestly family. In the exile, God called him to become a prophet to his fellow countrymen in exile.
Today’s text is the first of the visions that came to the prophet. This vision preceded Ezekiel’s call. The vision is one of the many theophanies scattered in the Old Testament.
A theophany is “a visible manifestation of God to humankind.” Theophanies paved the way for God’s final revelation in his Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.
We can surmise that the descriptions in the text is a metaphor to demonstrate that no matter how powerful and mighty a human king can be, such might and power pales into insignificance in the presence of the Sovereign LORD.
Importantly, it is a glimpse into God’s glory: “This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD.”
O yes! In any theophany, we can only see a “likeness” of the glory of the LORD, but in Christ Jesus has been revealed the full glory of the LORD.
At the appearance of the mere likeness of the glory of the LORD, the prophet fell facedown, and that is when he heard the voice of one speaking. That is the voice that called him to speak for the LORD to the rebellious people about their sins.
Tyrants and despots must know that no matter how high their thrones may be, the Sovereign LORD is enthroned higher, where he remains the divine initiator, controller, and decider of human history and destiny. To the rest of us, the Lord Jesus Christ is our glimpse to the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When we believe and obey him, we can enter into his glory as well.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, give us clean and pure hearts so that we can have a glimpse of the glory of the LORD. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
