“Watch Yourself Carefully…!”
When we listen to the voice of the crowd, our reasoning become clouded. The mob lacks sound judgment. That is why mob actions usually ends in fiasco and with casualties. When God gives you directives on what to do, do not allow the mob to sway you to the contrary!
Always concentrate on listening to the silent voice of God. Most times God whispers. Moses was God’s choice to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and to the promised land. He allowed himself to be misled by the people and he did what caused God to be angry with him. As a result God told him that he will not enter the promised land. Rather God earmarked his assistant Joshua as the one to lead the people into that land overflowing with milk and honey. Interestingly, God asked Moses to groom his successor (Dt.1:37-38).
Like any good father would do, Moses had to remind the people that when they enter the land, they should desist from idolatory of any form. Moses knew how easily it is to be corrupted by the cultures of a new environment. He told the people, “…watch yourselves carefully, so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape…” They were also charged not to look at the spendour of the sun, moon and stars and be enticed into bowing down to them and worshipping them.
Moses reiterated, “Be careful not to forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God “(Dt.4:15-24).
My friend, do you still remember the vows you made at your baptism/confirmation/reception into a group/dedication/ordination? Be careful not to forget them! Turn your eyes from looking at vanities, because when you look too long they become your idols! Fix your eyes only on Jesus Christ who is the image of God which no idol can equal!
Prayer: Holy Spirit help me to fix my eyes on Jesus Christ alone and not to be corrupted by the idols of any new environment. Amen!
