“Trust God To Fight For You!”(I Sam.17:31-51).
The great African writer, Chinua Achebe tells us of nwa nza a tiny weaver bird, who after eating a heavy meal challenged its Chi(personal god) to a wrestling contest.
Today our focus is on the story of how David, the little shepherd boy killed the giant Goliath with a mere sling and a stone.
Did David kill Goliath? No! David knew what Goliath and even king Saul and his army did not know.
Goliath was a giant, no doubt; but a giant is created by somebody. Whatever you may think you are at any given time, you are nothing before the LORD Almighty. My people say “the tiger broke its leg in the hole of a cricket.”
When Goliath saw David with the kind of weapons David had, he asked, “Am I a dog that you come at me with sticks?” So saying, he cursed David by his gods. He went further, “Come here, and I’ll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field.”
What Goliath saw before him was a ruddy and handsome boy whom he despised. But in truth David was like Goliath’s shield bearer who was in front of him.
David was God’s shield bearer, the LORD himself was the one facing Goliath!
And if Goliath did not know, David had to let him know: “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will hand you over to me, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head…All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
Yes, the battle is always the LORD’S own – if the cause is just and if it is against those who put their trust in him.
When the odds are against you and it looks as if the waves of the stormy seas is about to sweep you into the vast ocean, the voice rings from heaven, saying, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today…The LORD will fight for you, you need only to be still”(Ex.14:13-14).
My friend, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your path straight… Do not be wise in your own eyes…”(Prv.3:5-7)as Goliath did.
Yes, it is “not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD Almighty”(Zec.4:6).
So who killed Goliath? God killed Goliath through David. Goliath was killed by pride and arrogance. He thought he made himself who he became! He defied God! God had a way of bringing him down. If David had used the conventional weapons of war to fight Goliath, it would have been said that Goliath died as a brave warrior. In David’s eye Goliath was not different from the lions and tigers he often clubbed to death!
What gave David the victory are in these words: “I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty…whom you have defied…the battle is the LORD’S…”
Humble yourself before the LORD Almighty and trust him always.
Prayer: LORD, fight our battles for us because on our own we are helpless. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
Prayer point: Pray for God’s intervention in war situations within the continent of Africa.
