“Touch Not My Anointed!” (I Sam 26:13-25).
“The Lord delivered you into my hands today, but I would not lay hands on the Lord’s anointed…”
*”Touch not my anointed…” is kind of intentionally being misinterpreted to refer exclusively to *”a (wo)man of God!”*
With firm instructions from the Lord Samuel anointed Saul as the first monarch of Israel (I Sam.9:1-10:8). Samuel poured oil on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying that he Saul had been chosen by God to lead his inheritance (10:1). Even though Saul had been chosen to be king, he was made king only later on after his anointing.
Later on when Saul became unbecoming, the Lord rejected him and asked Samuel to anoint David as the next king. Samuel anointed David with oil in the presence of his brothers, “and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power”(I Sam.16:13). The Lord called Cyrus, a foreign king, “his anointed” because he gave Cyrus a divine assignment (Is.45:1ff).
Back to Saul and David: After David’s anointing he was recruited into the service of king Saul. You can imagine Saul’s frustration to hear through gossip that David had been anointed as the next king after him! No doubt he became so bent on killing David.
On his part, David did not want to lay hands on the Lord’s anointed because he too was an anointed of the Lord and did not expect anyone to lay hands on him.
David would have siezed the opportunity he had to kill Saul and take over as king, but he did not do so. He was rather disappointed with Abner and the army who were supposed to protect the king, but who failed in their duty. David continued to recognise the king as his lord, despite all the attempts the king made to kill him. David wondered why the king of Israel would come out to look for a flea – as one hunts a patridge in the mountains.”
David was aware that “…The Lord rewards every man for his righteousness and faithfulness. The Lord delivered you into my hands today, but I would not lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed. As surely as I valued your life today, so may the Lord value my life and deliver me from all trouble.”
It is good to be good to your enemies and they will bless you with their lips even if they do not keep to their words; just like Saul did.
My friend, the end of every one of us is inevitable! It will come when it must come. Why would you want the blood of somebody to be on your head! It is good to leave everything in the hands of the Lord who knows what you do not know.
Prayer: Holy Spirit teach me to value the life of others so that the Lord may value mine and deliver me from all trouble. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
