“Today If You Hear God’s Voice Harden Not Your Hearts…!”(Heb.3:1&6b-14).
The above words are used by mainline churches as a call to the worshippers to focus their attention on God’s word that is to be read. These words were used by the psalmist as a reminder to the people about what happened to their fathers at Meribah and at Massah (Ps.95:7b-11).
The writer of Hebrews used the words of the psalmist to remind the people of his time, just as we use it in our day to alert the people of our time that it is important to give heed to the word of God as long as it is Today.
If we do not correct the errors of yesterday by living approvingly Today, our tomorrows will be lived in regrets. Worst still, there may be no tomorrow. The Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius said, “perfection of character is this: to live each day as if it were your last, without frenzy, without apathy, without pretense.” Living each day as if it was your last means you give a lot of importance to your Today. Make the best and full use of your Today because tomorrow may never happen to you.
The most important thing we must do Today is to pay attention to the word of God and to live according to its prescription. At Meribah the people heard the word of God from Moses but chose to go their own way. Meribah symbolizes disobedience to God’s word, thus provoking him to anger.
There may never be a tomorrow. Today is the most important day of life, live it in reverence for God. No man is an island, entire of itself. That is why we must be one another’s helper today as we run this race of faith. “…encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”
Dear friend, to begin a race is not to end it. We actually “share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.”
Therefore, keep on keeping on in the race and hold firmly till the end the confidence you had at first.
Sunday prayer: Holy Spirit help me not to harden my heart as I hear God’s word Today. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
Rev. Babila Fochang.
