“The Lord’s Supper; A Symbol Of God’s Grace!”
The presence of Jesus on earth makes old things new. The only new thing Jesus brings is the way he reveals to us the depth of God’s love. Other than this, for the rest he merely filled the old with new content.
An example of the old that he filled with new content is the transformation of the Passover meal into the Lord’s Supper. Jesus and the Twelve were eating the Passover meal together. For the Twelve it was the regular Passover meal. Then “while they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’ Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, ‘Drink of it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins…'”(Mt.26:26-30).
This is how much God loves us; and this is how much Jesus loves us. And he expects us to do the same. “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends”(Jn.15:13).
We take particular note that Jesus says his blood is poured out “for many,” he doesn’t say “for all!” God gave his only begotten Son that “whoever believes in him…”(Jn.3:16). God deals with the remnants. And so, “…many are invited, but few are chosen”(Jn.2214).
It is a free offer, but goes only to those who prepare for it. It can go to all in the same way as it can go only to a few. Whoever is invited to the wedding feast must wear wedding clothes. That is why the minister calls to us to come with “faith and repentant hearts” to the table which the Lord has prepared for us. Each time we partake of this remembrance meal, we proclaim Christ’s death, as well as announcing his resurrection while awaiting his second coming.
By proclaiming Christ’s death and announcing his resurrection it reminds us that “all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death.” So we were “buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Jesus Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life”(Rom.6:3-4).
We cannot commemorate Christ unless we are dead to sin. Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with repentant hearts that rely on God’s grace.
Prayer of the week: Lord Jesus Christ thank you that your immeasurable love has granted me comfort in God’s presence. Amen!
Welcome back to a new working week! Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you;
