“The Lord Will Give You Victory!”
There are numerous African proverbs stressing the importance of great achievements through united efforts. Communal cohesion is very essential for the assurance of the wellbeing of everybody.
Yes, “one hand cannot tie a bundle.” “If you want to go fast travel alone, but if you want to go farther travel with others.” “The river meandered because it flowed alone.” This spirit of oneness is expressed in the East African word “Ubuntu” which is the equal of the Mungaka phrase, “Mun ni mun” better understood among pidgin English users as “Man live by man!”
Living and achieving together is a divine prerogative. Although God fights our battles for us, he does so through our collective efforts. God expects us to assign people on the basis of competence if he has to lead us to victory.
For the Lord to win us victory we need component warriors like Joshua and abledbodied fighters to be on the battlefield while prayer warriors like Moses, Aaron and Hur are up the hilltop interceding for the fighters”(Ex.17:8-13).
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still”(Ex.14:14), does not mean that you spend the time in long crying and shouting prayers. Rather, it means that although you are armed for battle and marching out boldly, the victory is won by God alone.
We do not by this minimise the role of soliciting God to come to our assistance. Moses and Aaron and Hur on the hilltop were the prayer warriors whose prayers caused Joshua and his fighters to win the battle. We need prayer and we need action! We should be persistent in our requests from God just like the persistent widow who finally caused the corrupt judge to grant her justice(Lk.18:1-8).
Like watchmen on the watchtower we should give God no rest until he answers us(Is.62:6-7). It is our duty to pray for people to succeed at their various places of work and carry out their responsibilities with the fear of the Lord. This is particularly important for those in authority so as to guarantee us peaceful and quiet lives (I Tim.2:1-6).
My friend, the sum total is that with collective effort and competence we can achieve much through prayers combined with concerted action.
Sunday prayer: Heavenly Father, use my competence to achieve positive results for the collective good of your people. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
