“The Lord Is Our Shepherd!”
The search for meaning and fulfilment in this life leads people to different routes. In Africa this search takes people to idols, diviners and seers (they are called by different names across the continent). These people are supposedly able to tap into the future and into the spiritual realm, and they are able to predict the future. Maybe some are genuine, but as far as I know the majority are charlatans.
We were about the ages of seventeen when a brother friend of mine told me and another friend to accompany him to a very popular seer in our quarter. When we got there, he reported to the seer that he kept money in the house and it was stolen. He suspected us his friends who knew where he kept the money. He told the seer that we were three of us, but one friend had just left. The seer conjured his gourd and convincingly told us that the money was with the absent friend. When we left our friend burst into laughter and told us that the so-called renowned seer was a fake. No money had been stolen from him.
My late father told me a story how back in the days, somebody came to them in Tiko convincing them to buy magic rings that provided security for travellers. He told them that whoever has the ring on can never die in an accident. The man himself was wearing some of those rings. While sailing from Tiko to Bota island the canoe capsized and the man drowned with his rings.
The stories abound about charlatan seers. The sad part of it is that in our generation these charlatans have disguised themselves as prophets and prophetesses of the Most High God!
The search for meaning is leading many to the wrong places. They go to idols and diviners, but, “the idols speak deceit, diviners see visions that lie; they tell dreams that are false, they give comfort in vain.” All this because the people lack direction. They “wander like sheep oppressed for lack of a shepherd.” The Lord says for this reason his “anger burns against the shepherds” and he “will punish the leaders” as he himself “will care for his flock.”
He has done this through Jesus Christ who is the Cornerstone. Therefore, turn your back from deceitful idols, diviners and seers. Ask the Lord for whatever you want. The Lord is generous to everybody. “He gives showers of rain to men, and plants of the field to everyone”(Zec.10:1-4). The Lord Almighty is our only Great provider and the Good Shepherd. Look up to him and your day must be bright.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ you are the solid rock on which I stand; I know all other ground is sinking sand. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
