“Thank You Lord Jesus Christ!”
Business people invest where they are sure to maximise profit. If instead of making profit one is rather losing capital, the next thing is to shut down.
In the same way Jesus tells the parable of a man who planted a fig tree in his vineyard. He went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. He told his gardener, “For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it waste up the soil?” The gardener pleaded with the master to allow him till and fertilize the tree for one more year and “if it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down”(Lk.13:6-9).
This is a parable directed to us the living who think that we are alive because we live upright lives than the people who have died. The main thrust of the story is, “unless you repent, you too will all perish”(Lk.13:3b &5).
The fig tree represents us as a people or you and I as individuals. We are not alive because of our righteousness. We are alive because we are living under grace. We are living because Jesus the gardener has pleaded with his Father to give us ample opportunity like the fig tree. He nutures us through the Holy Spirit and if we cannot bear fruit worthy of repentance, the Father will destroy us.
The gardener said, “Sir, leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.” So to say, grace is inelastic! It strectches to a point where it can go no further! Grace is time bound!
We are therefore called upon to use this moment in which we are living under grace to bear fruit worthy of repentance. The time to make amends with God and with fellow brethren is now as there may be no tomorrow!
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ thank you for standing the gap for me, buying time to give me opportunity to make amends. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
