“Show Your Faith By What You Do!”
“But someone will say, ‘You have faith; I have deeds.’ Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do…You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?…As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deed is dead”(Jam.2:18-26).
The drought was severe. The plants were withering and so impending famine was inevitable if the rains did not come. The people decided to gather in an open space that could contain all of them and pray to God to send them rain. They prayed fervently. God heard their prayer and opened all the floodgates in the sky. It did not only rain cats and dogs; it rained elephants and tigers! The people were drenched to the bones. There was only one boy there who was not beaten by the rain. He had gone to the prayer ground with his umbrella. Maybe he was the only one who had genuine faith that God will answer their prayer!
You plant the seed because you ate the fruit and it was nice. In later days one could only say the fruits of the tree are good or bad if the tree produces fruits. Without bearing fruits, the tree will just be occupying space. So it is with faith and works. Faith is the tree and works are the good fruits of the tree. Paul says “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love”(Gal.5:6). In fact, faith that saves produces good works. Faith like love expresses itself in good works. John writes, “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him. Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth”(I Jn.3:17-18).
Just as we cannot seperate love from action, in the same way faith cannot be seperated from good works. The telltale of (invisible) faith is the visible good works. “Show your faith by what you do because faith is loving obedience to Jesus Christ and doing his will of love here on earth.
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit lead me daily so that I should show my faith by what I do. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
