“Pray For Spiritual Discernment!”
Prophet Elijah is unique among the Old Testament prophets in that he was taken up to heaven alive. Some may say even today he still has not died. The difference between Elijah and Christ is that Christ tasted death so as to overcome death through the resurrection, thus becoming the firstborn of the resurrection.
Traditional Jewish eschatology was that Elijah will appear before the coming of the Christ. This was based on the prophecy of Malachi, “See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers…”(4:5-6).
It happened that when the three disciples witnessed the teansfiguration of Jesus on the mountain, the above passage of Malachi came to their mind, so they asked Jesus, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”
Jesus was agreed with this theology. He affirmed, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands”(Mt.17:9-13).
According to Jesus, John the Baptist was Elijah who had come as was prophesied. But he was not recognized. Rather they ignored him and killed him. Just the same way he Jesus was to be treated!
In every generation there is a lot that goes on in God’s name, but which contradicts God in every way! In this journey of faith we should constantly pray for spiritual discernment to know when God does what we have been hoping for!
Do not study the word expecting an Elijah, yet fail to recognize him in the person of John the Baptist. Otherwise you will do to the Son of Man the same thing that you did to John the Baptist.
Weekend prayer: Lord Jesus Christ take off my eyes the scale of spiritual blindness so that by grace I can see and understand fully your timing. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
