“Our Obligation: Live By The Spirit!”(Rom.8:12-13).
“Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation – but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.”
Within the text we take note of the word “obligation.” Obligation is “an act or course to which we are morally or legally bound; a duty or commitment.”
Freewill offers us two options from which to choose. It is either the flesh or the Spirit.
Living by the flesh leads to death, but death of the flesh enables one to live.
One way or the other, to fulfil our obligation death has to occur. It is like ‘The Devil’s Alternative.” Living by the flesh leads to spiritual death, but living by the Spirit puts to death the misdeeds of the body, thus assuring life with Christ.
The author has stated earlier: “Those Who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires…”(We recommend a slow and diligent reading of the whole of this chapter).
We can choose – and we are always choosing, but choosing wrongly. And the wrong choice has deadly consequences.
As the redeemed of God in Christ we are reminded that the choice of living in the Spirit is an obligation.
Each time you are faced with a choice between the body and the Spirit, remember where your obligation lies.
Prayer: Holy Spirit help me to put to death the misdeeds of the body and live by the Spirit. Amen,!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
