“Obey The Law That Liberates…!”
Pharisees were not usually in alignment with Jesus’ approach to the law. Ironically they were always close by wherever Jesus was; particularly on the Sabbath. If they listened or watched Jesus and his disciples, it was either to trap him or to accuse him (Mt.12:1-8).
Jesus contested the Pharisaic interpretation of scripture and that is exactly what the Pharisees were doing to him. Concerning the keeping of the Sabbath, Jewish tradition had so multiplied the requirements and restrictions for keeping the Sabbath such that it became a heavy burden to bear. Jesus emphasised that the God-given purpose of the Sabbath was intended for the benefit of people, for their spiritual, mental and physical restoration(Ex.20:8-11).
It may not be lawful to harvest grain on the Sabbath, but there should be an exception to the hungry person who picks grain and eat on the Sabbath.
David’s men were hungry and ate food meant for priests only; Jesus’ didciples were hungry and picked and ate grains on the Sabbath. Techincally, they violated the Sabbath because they harvested, but they were saved from starvation. This is called “situational ethics.”
More so, Jesus the law giver is himself present! “The Son of man is the Lord of the Sabbath.” Jesus has authority to overrule human regulations concerning the Sabbath. Especially when the interpretation of the Pharisees deviate from the spirit of the Sabbath, thus becoming a burden to the people.
We have to be wary of interpretation of laws that become a burden on the people! Whatever scriptures stipulate as our Christian ethics liberates rather than enslaves!
Jesus says if we fully understand what this scripture means: “I desire mercy and not sacrifice,” we would not condemn the innocent. Millions of people would die if we all automatically cease from doing any work for the twenty-four hours of each Sunday. Whatever enhances life is worth doing exceptionally on Sunday. After all, we worship him, ask for his blessings and make our prayers to the Lord on Sunday. He hears us on Sunday meaning he works 24 on 24 onvsunday.Amen
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ lead me to live the day of rest according to your intended purpose. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
