“Lord, Turn My Eyes From Looking At Vanities…!”
A Mungaka dirge goes, “When I was coming I came empty handed. Then I came and saw the things of this world and called them mine. When it will be time for me to return I will go to meet Jesus empty handed just as I came.”
Indeed, Jesus asked, what it shall profit a man if he owns the whole world but losses his life.
When we become preoccupied with mundane issues, we drift away from the things of God. Jesus says you cannot serve two masters at the same time. Your allegiance would weigh on one side than the other.
Today John puts it to us in very plain words: “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, lust of the eyes and the boasting of what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives for ever”(I Jn.2:12-17).
You see my dear friend, the historic unfinished seventy-two rooms stone castle is near my compound. I had this elder brother who was getting old without a house of his own. Each time he was berated for not having a house he jokingly replied, “Stop bothering me. If all the boys in the quarter make contributions and complete the seventy-two rooms, they would comfortably live there and there would still be extra space.” As a child I thought his response was the philosophy of sour grapes, but I now see things differently.
Those who have overcome the evil one are strong and the word of God lives in them.
A better world is possible if each person tried to have just enough and share the rest with the “have nots!” Bottomline is, “Do not love the world or anything in the world.” For if you do, then “the love of the Father is not in you!”
Prayer: Holy Spirit turn my eyes from looking at vanities so that I should focus my love on the Father through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
