“Lord Show Us Your Choice!”
After the joy of the Ascension the apostles returned to Jerusalem to wait and receive the Holy Spirit as Jesus had instructed. From Ascension there is a ten day wait before Pentecost. We can already see the formation of the church in its embryonic stage. About a hundred and twenty members in all met constantly in prayer.
True to what Jesus said, that the kingdom of heaven is like a mustsrd seed which when planted grows and spread to become a big tree where birds build their nest. Today that mustard seed numbering just about a hundred and twenty persons before Pentecost has become a world organisation sans rival. And it keeps on expanding until the whole word will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
If Jesus told the apostles to wait to receive the Holy Spirit it is not as if the Holy Spirit was absent in the world. The Spirit was to give them power to be witnesses for Christ.
The role of Judas in the salvation story may have been a wicked one which he paid for with his life, but he had to do what he did to fulfil scriptures (Cf. Jn.13:26-30). The Holy Spirit had also long spoken through David about Judas and his replacement. There was need for a criteria for selection to fill the gap of leadership.
Such a person had to be one who had been with the apostles “the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among them, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up…” Two names were proposed: Justus and Mathias. They were prayed for and lots were cast. Mathias won and was added to the eleven apostles (Acts 1:12-26).
This is an indisputable exemplary model for leadership (s)election.
Longevity in service, Prayer and the Ballot. When this is applied at all levels young upstarts would not be selected to lord it over those who have stayed long in service.
Commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit who empowers us for witnessing is only a reminder. The Holy Spirit is already with us guiding and leading us into all truths.
Sunday prayer: Cast me not from your presence O Lord and do not take your Holy Spirit from me. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
