“Lord Jesus Christ, Thank You For Your Sacrificial Love!”(Jn.12:20-26).
Yesterday the Presbyterian pastors of Mezam presbytery were having their monthly meeting at Mbelewa, one of the scary parts of town. My interests here is a song the Christian Women Fellowship group was singing when we arrived “This is the day we have been waiting for…” I asked jokingly what was so important for such a day for an ordinary meeting of a few pastors? Some incidents of life may be insignificant but for certain people such are rare moments worth cherishing. Straight from the meeting I left for a funeral in my village. I was stopped at a control point where I pass regularly. There is a speed brake before that control which kind of cause you to reduce your speed coming from Bamenda. I was at less than 30kmph. The officer who stopped me said I was approaching the control with speed. I said I was sorry and that I won’t do it again. He kept insisting, so I told him that he should not force a lie on me because I was on less than 30kmph. In his words, he decided to delay me since I was in such a hurry. He asked me to scatter everything in the booth, not withstanding that I was in my pastoral attire.
The part of interest: More than once he brandished the gun telling me that the guns have not been given them for nothing. He said if I pass there again with speed he will shoot and kill me. He said he is sure I have buried many people who have been killed and my own death won’t matter. I looked him straight in the eyes and told him:“As if I care! You can shoot even now! After all I’m not better than those who have been killed!”
So was I surprised when I read on social media that a man and his two sons were dragged out of bed and killed in cold blood? Not at all, considering that I was told the reason for the gun on that same day! Everyday and from both sides death is constantly starring us in the eyes. Whether in the home or on the streets, we are no longer safe.
We are walking corspes accompanied by death – that one detestable friend who will exit us all from this stage called, “world.”
In the meantime we keep hoping and trusting in that man who has assured us:“The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honour the one who serves me.”
Before this assurance Jesus predicted his death saying,“The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified…” Jesus saw his death as a kernel seed which when it falls to the ground must die before producing many seeds. So who are we to be scared when threatened by the gun! We know that those who live by the sword perish through the sword! Those whose strength lies in the use of weapons are helpless without those weapons!
We pray for the days of strife to be soon over; but while it is now let us serve God and not fear man!
Weekend prayer: Lord Jesus Christ give me the courage to face my destiny in your service without being scared of human threats. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
