“Lord Jesus Christ Give Me Living Water!”(Jn.4:4-15).
God’s blessings does not fall on us like Manna fell from heaven. God uses somebody to bless somebody. To this end our ancestors taught us the importance of being welcoming to weary travellers and being kind to strangers.
One did not sleep in the house without drinking water and some cooked food, since at night God could disguise as a traveller and beg for drinking water.
A myth to explain why chimpanzees behave like humans says one night God knocked on the doors of all the houses of a certain village begging for drinking water. He received none. He became angry and turned the villagers into chimpanzees.
Jesus told the Samaritan woman,“If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
Unfortunately the woman was living in the past. She was keeping grudges of old animosities which blinded her from seeing and enjoying present blessings. She wondered how Jesus could draw water since he had no container with which to draw from the deep well. Was Jesus claiming to be better than Jacob who gave them the well and drank from it himself?
Yes, of course! Even today, Jesus is greater than our ancestors!
Jesus told her what he is telling us everyday:“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
The Lord Jesus Christ breaches all protocols to reach any sinner like us. He passed through Samaria, which was not allowed of Jews of “true blood.” He decided to beg water to drink from a woman, a Samaritan woman for that mater. Worst of all, a woman who was living in concubinage after five marriages. Yet Jesus promised her water that after drinking one can thirsts no more.
Dear friend, Jesus Christ is reaching out to any of us who thirsts for the gifts of the kingdom. May our daily resolve be to ask him,“Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty again and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
Yes, the search for mundane things gives us only temporary satisfaction. True satisfaction comes from the Spirit who endows us with uncountable spiritual gifts.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, fill me with the water from your fountain of life so that I won’t thirst again. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
