“Lord Jesus Christ Feed Me Till I Want No More!”
Yesterday I was chatting with a Top fan of Morning Meditation who is of the Orokos. Our topic of interest was on the translation of “Bread Of Life” into mother tongue. He said each time he reads any biblical passage that talks of bread, he can’t help but think that in Oroko it should be translated as “plantain;” since plantain is the popular food of the Orokos.
I asked what Oroko word has been used to translate the biblical bread. He told me they have maintained bread. I told him they used the principle of “formal equivalence” as opposed to the principle of “dynamic equivalence,” which was used to translate bread into Mungaka as “ngùñ” – fufucorn.
We favor dynamic equivalence because if God had decided to incarnate Jesus in Bali, Jesus would not have said, “I am the bread of life…”; he would have said, “I am the fufucorn of life…” Jesus used a metaphor he was familiar with in the context of his incarnation. Bread was unknown to Mungaka speakers, just as fufucorn was unknown to Jesus and the Jews. Even today that bread is known, its name in popular lingua franca for Mungaka speakers still remain bread; except where in dynamic equivalence it is translated “ngùñ mùkali” – English fufucorn.
Doubting Thomases wanted Jesus to give them a miraculous sign for them to see and believe in him. Jesus told them, “…For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world…I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty…”(Jn.6:30-36).
Jesus Christ is the epicenter of life. It doesn’t matter what metaphor is used to show how central he is to human existence. Whether he is bread, fufucorn or plantain is not central to salvation. Bread or fufucorn or plantain is to the physical body as Jesus is important to the spiritual body. The food that sustains the physical body will perish with the physical body. And Jesus the Christ who sustains the spiritual body will enhance imperishable life to the spiritual body.
Believe in Jesus Christ and you will find inner peace and you would never be hungry. But if you do not believe in him, you would remain restless and instatiable.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ I believe you are the bread of life. Feed me till I want no more. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
