“Lord, Fill My Thirsty Soul To The Brim!”
If you have ever thirsted for water until your throat became parched then you can understand what it means that “hunger caused the bird to eat pepper.” Acute thirst for water would push you to pay any price just to have a sip of refreshing water.
But that is just to satisfy a physical thirst. There is a spiritual thirst which in times like this may push one to ask, “God where are you?” The question is not a forlorn hope; it is a longing. The psalmist says, “As the dear pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God…” (42:1-2).
Unfortunately we are often the cause of such thirst. The good shepherd may lead us to pools of refreshing waters but will not force us to drink. When we begin to get thirsty while back on the hills, the shepherd is not to blame.
God is beckoning the exiles that we are, “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come buy wine and milk without money and without cost…” There is no need spending money on charms, idols, going to “marabouts,” buying magic rings or belonging to esoteric fraternities while the One who has control over all those things can give you the most portent spiritual fortification for free! (Is.55: 1-5).
Jesus Christ is the one who satisfies our spiritual thirsts. In a loud voice he is saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow within him” (Jn.7:37-38).
My friend, Jesus says when we drink ordinary water, no mater how refreshing, we would thirst again, “but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life”(Jn.4:13-14).
Worthy to note: The water is free but available to those who are thirsty and wish to have it. John puts it so well, “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!” Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life” (Rev.22:17).
Why waste time? Come and get for free what you buy with money but which cannot satisfy!
Prayer: Lord here I come; open the free water from the fountain of life and fill my thirsty soul to the brim. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
