“Live Wisely Today!”

Disagreements over key tenets of a faith by adherents as we have today is nothing strange. During the time of Jesus, two main religious groups existed within Judaism. The Pharisees and the Sadducees. Contrary to the beliefs of the Pharisees, the Sadducees did not believe in spirits, angels, the resurrection nor any reward of an afterlife.
They came to Jesus seeking clarification on this whole concept of the resurrection. The law said if a man died without having a child, his brother should marry his widow and continue with the brothers bloodline. It so happen that a deceased brother’s widow was inherited by his six siblings in succession. Then the big question, “…at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them married him?”
This was not an imaginary tale formulated to show the complication and confusion that may be expected in the resurrection – if at all there is a resurrection as by their thinking. Even before Moses’ law in Deuteronomy 25:5 -10, Judah’s son Er was married to Tamar. Because he was wicked in God’s sight he died without a child. Er’s brother Onan was asked to marry his brother’s widow. He didn’t want to give birth to children that were not his own, so he always “spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother.” This was a wicked act in God’s sight, so God killed him also. Judah became afraid to allow his third son Shelah to marry Tamar…(Gen. 38:1ff).
Jesus as usual used the moment to show the Sadducees how wrong they were on two counts. Firstly they justified their non-belief in the resurrection on the grounds that the Old Testament did not teach about the resurrection. Jesus enlightened their ignorance on this. Each time they consider God as “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob,” they are actually acknowledging that he is their God in the present, not the God of some late ancestors!
They are already alive in the resurrection.(Mtt.22:23-33).
They were also ignorant about their understanding of life after the resurrection. Their understanding of life in the resurrection was purely anthropocentric!
There is no anthropocentric activity in the resurrection life. In the resurrection life is in the spirit. There are just two ways by which life will exist in the resurrection: as an individual you will either enjoy the joyous life of bliss in heaven or a life of damnation in hell! The choice is made while you are still in this world now!
The anthropocentric life you live now determines the spiritual abode and life you will live in the resurrection! Therefore choose and live here and now wisely!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
