“Keep The Commandment For It Is Holy, Righteous And Good!”
The other day my wife gave chicken to our thirteen year old girl to boil. When my wife was dishing the meal she didn’t find the gizzard. When she asked the girl she replied offhandedly that she ate it as the smallest piece to know if the chicken was ready. We laughed over it because she did not know that it was wrong to eat the gizzard. However, I told her it was wrong to eat any piece of the chicken when boiling.
Most times we take things for granted. We often do not tell the children what to do or what not to do. Yet we are quick to chastise them for wrongdoing. You cannot blame somebody for doing something if you have not told the person, “Do this,” or “Do not do this…”
Where there is no law there is no offense. The law reveals sin as it produces the desire to do what the law says “don’t do” or the desire not to do what the law says, “do!”
Eating the fruit in the garden of Eden was a sinful act because God had told Adam, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil…” (Gen.2:16&17).
In his struggle with sin Paul writes, “…I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, ‘Do not covet.’ But sin, siezing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from the law, sin is dead.”
It is not as if the law is evil. On the contrary, “…the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.” Through the commadment sin becomes utterly sinful (Rom.7:7-13).
This is to say the law exposes us to what is sinful and gives us the opprtunity to use freewill with a willpower to overcome sinful desires.
The struggles of Paul in trying to explain this in his own life somehow xrays the depth of each person’s weaknesses, but at the same time it shows us that no matter how intense our struggles win sin can be, we can be overcomers by suppresing sinful desires.
Prayer: Holy Spirit keep prodding me to keep the commandment because it is holy, righteous and good. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
