“Judge Yourself And You Won’t Come Under God’s Judgment!”
I learned from my dad that it is good to eat at home before leaving the house; notwithstanding whether you are leaving to attend a banquet of great feasting. It also doesn’t matter whether what you eat is only roasted plantain with red oil or overnight fufucorn with plum, what is important is to fill your stomach before leaving your house. Once you have a full stomach at home, you won’t disgrace yourself in public by rushing after food.
Paul had earlier thought in that line when he told the Corinthians, “…when you come together to eat, wait for each other. If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment.”
It good for those who are hungry to eat at home and not bring selfish and discriminatory practices into the church. At public occasions it is prudent to practice restraint and wait to eat with others. One is often ashamed to see the mountain of food that some supposedly respectable persons mount on their plates. Once people see and start grumbling, such greed and selfishness becomes judgment upon the one concerned.
Fortunately our today’s Lord’s Supper is not celebrated with food as was in Corinth. However we can apply the following verses in a general context of personal examination and confession before receiving the Lord’s Supper: “Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognising the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself….”(I Cor.11:27-34). This last verse is still not a justification for transubstatiation or consubstantiation.
Two points to keep in mind: Do not let food to rush you at public banquets. To maintain your self-worth eat at home before attending such banquets.
Importantly for spiritual upbuilding: examine yourself before coming to receive the Lord’s Supper. Do not bring judgment upon yourself by receiving the meal in an unworthy manner.
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit purify me so that I should not approach the throne of grace in an unworthy manner. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
