“Jesus Christ Is The End Of Religious Prejudices!”
When I looked up the word “prejudice” I found a few meanings, but the one which suits our intention here is: “Prejudice is an unreasonable dislike of a particular group of people or things, or a preference for one group of people or things over another.”
Each tribe has some prejudiced perjorative slang used in describing other tribes. The Bali people qualify all non Balis as “ba tum”(outsiders). All religions including major world religions like Christianity and Islam are prejudicial. This is unfortunate for Christianity because with the coming of Jesus Christ God put an end to the prejudiced conception that was popular in Judaism.
Prejudice in religion is rooted in “exclusionism” – outsiders and insiders. Christianity unfortunately practices the worst form of prejudice amongst her adherents today. The main divisions being Catholics, Protestants and Pentecostals. Within each of the above prejudices can still be observed from one protestant denomination against the other, various brands or orders in catholicism and also the various shades of pentecostalism; including the new charismatic movements which now cut across the above main denominational boundaries.
Christian conversion means turning to Christ. This is not just by receiving baptism as an individual. Full conversion include converting the totality of a people and their worldviews. It means turning of all one’s relations and disrelations towards Christ. That is when at the mention of the name of Jesus Christ every knee bows.
Peter thought he was a true convert and disciple of Jesus Christ. He was even an evangelist, yet he was not fully converted. He was still thinking like a Jew. He still considered that some animals were clean while others were unclean until it was revealed to him in a vision, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” Immediately after this he was requested to go to the home of Cornelius.
Cornelius was a God-fearing Gentile, respected by all the Jewish people. An angel told him to invite Peter. On the other side the Spirit told Peter not to hesitate to go to the house of Cornelius for it was God sending him.
Once in the home of Cornelius and after listening to Cornelius Peter was converted of his cultural inclinations. This explains why some theologians consider that it is Peter who was first converted of his cultural correctness before he himself converted Cornelius and others who were present with Cornelius.
My friend, true conversion takes place when you come to the realisation like Peter that it is true that “God does not show favoutitism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right.” God has done this true Jesus Christ(Acts 10:34-38).
In Christ we are one. Anyone who has truly been converted to Christ learns to build bridges that links each other and not to build walls that divide! When your actions are centred around “we and them” just know that you are still to be converted to Christ. It doesn’t matter whether you are an evangelist or top prelate, stop being prejudicial in your Christianity! There is no “we and them!” Christ is for all who fear God!
Prayer: Holy Spirit inspire me not to be prejudiced against any group of persons. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
