“Holy Spirit Locate Me And Deepen My Faith!”
“When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, ‘I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.'”(Lk.7:1-10).
According to the gospels, there are only two instances where Jesus was amazed. Apart from his amazement at the faith of the centurion, the other instance was in his hometown where he was amazed at the lack of faith of the people of his hometown (Mk.6:6).
To be amazed is to be greatly surprised. One can be amazed at something positive even as one can be amazed at something negative.
What Jesus said about the centurion is the same as saying of a nonchristian, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in the church.” By this we are not saying there are no people with faith in the church, but people of “great faith” may be lacking therein.
Ironically Jesus was saying this “to the crowd following him.” So to say, the crowd following him were among those who lacked the great faith of the centurion. Yet the crowd were Israelites, just as believers today are the new Israel.
In other words, many are the crowds overcrowding the places of Christ yet not having the faith of an outsider!
The centurion was an officer of the Roman army of occupation. He was in command of a hundred soldiers. Yet, he lived the expectations of the gospel. He valued his sick servant highly. He heard about Jesus and by faith he knew Jesus could heal his servant. Even though he was in the army of occupation he had won the goodwill of the Israelites.
The elders whom he sent to Jesus pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” To crown it all, when Jesus was on his way to the man’s house, he sent word to Jesus not to bother to come to his house, saying inter-alia, “…I do not consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.” What “great faith” indeed!
Dear friend, we are either in or out, but either way Jesus is amazed at our actions, who we are, what we are, who and what we believe in. If we do not believe in Jesus he will be amazed by our lack of faith. And if we believe in him, he will commend our faith.
Weekend prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, I am not worthy to come to you, but only say the word and I will be whole. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
