“Holy Spirit Be My Inspiration To Confess That ‘Jesus Is Lord’!”
The other day I read an interesting post from a colleague. It was about “simony.” He raised a concern that whereas Simon the magician asked Peter and John to lay their hands on him to receive the Holy Spirit, today men of God go to magicians to receive powers in other to operate.
In a letter addressed to Paul the Corinthian Christians had raised a number of questions. One of them was about spiritual gifts. Before enumerating the spiritual gifts, Paul first reminded them that when they were still pagans, one way or the other they were influenced and led astray to mute idols. “…no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, ‘Jesus be cursed,’ and no one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit” (I Cor.12:1-3).
Paul’s words to the Corinthians speaks relevantly to us today. The Holy Spirit is the one who inspires us to confess that “Jesus is Lord.” Before the Apostles’ Creed and other creeds were formulated, “Jesus is Lord” was the earliest confession of Faith. In a world dominated by myriads of man-made gods – including humans who raise themselves to the rank of the gods – true believers must be led by the Holy Spirit to say “Jesus is Lord!”
Any Christian who goes to a marabout to receive extra power or uses magic rings or belongs to any esoteric fraternity or worships ancestors or raises himself to the rank of the gods is practically – indirectly – saying “Jesus be cursed!” Remember that whoever takes groundnuts in both hands will find it difficult to hold the ladder and descend from the ceiling barn. Let the Holy Spirit alone be your guide who leads you to say, “Jesus is Lord!”
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit inspire me to confess that Jesus is Lord. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
