“Heavenly Father Give Me The Holy Spirit!”
Two days ago my three year old granddaughter was very serious at a certain corner of the house. When I asked to know what she was doing, she told me she was cooking. Very soon she brought a plate containing some garlic peelings and a spoon and gave to me saying it was my own food. She then told me to eat it like that because there was no maggi inside.
She has never actually been taught how to cook or how to serve a meal, but she has been learning by rote.
This is just an example of the many things she does, just like other children do without being taught. There are many things in life which parents and mentors take for granted that children and the mentored should learn by rote.
One day Jesus had just finished praying in a certain place when one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
Maybe if I was Jesus, knowing that I was superior to John I would have asked the disciple, “How can you say that? How dare you want to show me that I should copy from John?” Jesus however in his humble nature said to them what has come to be known as the “Lord’s Prayer.” Unfortunately we often recite it like a poem, hardly digesting and living its content.
The concern raised by the disciple and Jesus’ prompt response is indicative that we shouldn’t always take for granted that some things are learned by rote. Prayer was a regular practice of Jesus as he “often withdrew to lonely places and prayed”(Lk.5:16), but he probably took it for granted that they knew how to pray.
Prayer is persistence, perseverance and patience. Through perseistence even the most hard-hearted person will soften up and listen to you when you sweet-talk them. This means choice of words are important when making a request; especially to God. Then when you ask it will be given to you, when you seek you will find and when you knock the door will be opened to you.
God knows just what we need. Whatever we call blessing which cause us heartache cannot be from God who knows how to give the Holy Spirit to his children (Lk.11:1-13).
Prayer of the week: Father thank you for giving me the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen!
Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you!
