“God Has Been Faithful To His Covenant, Have A Closer Walk With Him!”
At age ninety-nine God appeared to Abram to remind him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless. I will confirm my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers…You will be father of many nations…and kings will come from you…As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you…You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and you.” This was to include for generations to come every male above eight days old, whether born in his household or bought with money. It was to be a covenant in the flesh to be an everlasting covenant(Gen.17:1-13).
Abram limited this sign to the removal of the foreskin of the male organ. Such limitation also limits the grace of God thus making the covenant relationship a male preserve. In other words women and male babies less than eight days old were excluded from the covenant.
Those who keep the covenant are expected to “fear the Lord…walk in his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul…Circumcise your hearts…and do not be stiff-necked”(Deut.10:14-16).
God however recongnises that left to us we would not be able to fulfil our own side of the bargain, so he says, he himself will circumcise our hearts (Deut 30:6). If we confess our sins and the uncircumcised hearts become humbled he will remember his covenant(Lev.26:40-42).
No-one is exempted, for as Isaiah puts it, “all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags…and like the wind our sins sweep us away”(64:6).
God nevertheless has kept his side of the bargain by sending his Son as a means of grace so that we can be filled with the Holy Spirit who enables us to circumcise our hearts.
Thus Paul admonishes, “See that no-one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy which depends on human tradition…rather than on Christ. For in Christ the fulness of Deity lives in bodily form..In him you were circumcised, in the putting away of your sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with circumcision done by Christ…”(Col.2:8-14).
My friend, this is the last but one day to the end of the year 2019. May our cross over into 2020 be a closer walk with God through the grace of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Prayer of the week: “Create in me a pure and clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.” Amen!
Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you! Wishing you a fulfilling new year!
