“Go, Baptize And Teach!”
I read an article in which the author was laboriously arguing against Christian baptism using the “Trinitarian formula.” While he quoted from Acts of the Apostles to justify his claims, he carefully avoided the Great Commission. Before ascending to heaven, the risen Lord told the disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make didciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age”(Mt.28:16-20).
To say that the trinitarian formula for baptism is wrong is the result of ecclectic reading of the Bible – “selecting what appears to be best in various doctrines…”
The Great Commission includes, 1. Go. 2. Baptizing them, and 3. Teaching them to obey everything.
We must be ready at all times to go where souls have not yet been won for Christ. After baptism we must continue to teach the word so that all who have been baptized should obey all that the Lord has commanded.
We have the courage and confidence that comes from the assuring words of Christ that he will be with us always, to the very end of the age. Even our work is inspired and directed by the Trinity as the Holy Spirit endows us with various kinds of gifts for ministry, for different kinds of services from the same Lord and different kinds of working, “but the same God works all of them in all men”(I Cor.12:4-6).
And when we harness our various gifts for different services for different working like a symphony orchestra, we would be able to turn the world upside down so that “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow… and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord…”(Phi.2:10-11).
Prayer: Holy Spirit equip us with various gifts and also enable us to harness them, working in oneness to fulfil the Great Commission. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
