“Fill Your Heart With Good Content!”
The heart in biblical language is “the center of the human spirit, from which springs emotions, thoughts, motivations, courage and action.”
The heart is the “wellspring of life.” The wiseman says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life”(Prv.4:23). That is to say if we store up good things in our hearts, our words and actions will be good.
The psalmist says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you”(Ps.119:11).
What is it that you have stored in your heart? These days there is a common struggle against hate speech. We easily caution others to watch their tongues. Combating hate speech cannot just be about asking people to watch their tongues. Jesus says an evil person cannot say anything good because “out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” We have noted that the heart is the wellspring of life. Wellspring is an abundant source of something. So to say, the heart is an abundant source for whatever we have in it. And the words we speak is an overflow of what is in the heart. An overflow is the excess of something from a container. The psalmist says, “my cup overflows”(23:5b).
The content of the heart is either good or evil. The words of the mouth and actions are mere overflows of the content. It is frightening what we read on social media, especially in the comment sections! It is ugly, very ugly to read comments of people rejoicing over brutal killings; depending on whichever side you are and depending on who has killed who! All such comments are revealing of the evil content within! Thought is father to the word and the action!
It is not as if all is lost. An evil heart can still be transformed to become good. Jesus says, “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.”
When we fill our hearts with good content our mouths will speak good words. By this we would be able to overcome hate speech. Besides, it should scare us to know that we will have to give an account on the day of judgment for every careless word we have spoken. For by our words we will be acquitted or condemned(Mt.12:33-37).
Prayer of the week: Holy Spirit enable me to store only good things within me and guide me to chose my words wisely. Amen!
Welcome back to a new working week! Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you!
