“Don’t Be Afraid; Just Believe!”
Most Bible narrations may not be intended for the benefit of all the readers. Our prayer is that you may be someone in whose situation the message speaks as it does in such narratives.
Text: Mk.5:21-24&35-43.
Let us look at this in the text cited above. It is the story concerning the daughter of Jarius, a synagogue ruler. Jarius “seeing Jesus, fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, ‘My little daughter is dying. Please come and lay your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.’ So Jesus went with him.”
Here we have Jarius who makes the appeal and Jesus who responds to the appeal. Then there is a large crowd that followed and pressed around them.
Soon we have some discouragers, faith destroyers who think they have concern for both Jarius and Jesus. They are from the house of Jarius. They say “Your daughter is already dead, why bother the teacher?
Of course, Jesus ignores what they say and reassures Jarius, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
Jesus selects three of his close aides, Peter, James and John. At the home of Jarius is a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. It is no longer a mere sick situation. The girl is dead by human limited understanding. But to Jesus the commotion is unfounded because “the child is not dead but asleep.”
Well, his words only attract laughter, ironically from a wailing crowd. Jesus thins the crowd as he takes just “the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went where the child was. He healed the child by lifting her up and saying to her, “Little girl, I say get up!” It was an imperative! “Immediately the girl stood up and walked around. “They were completely astonished.”
My friend, the question I pose to you this morning is, “Which character best describes you and your situation in this text?
There are so many sickening situations around or concerning you for which you need Jesus to bring healing. Even by the time Jesus gets to you, others may hypocritically and naively be discouraging you that the situation is beyond remedy! Do not listen to them! Jesus Christ whose intervention you require is assuring you: “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
Jesus may not bring our dead ones back to life, but plead earnestly with him to speak life to that seemingly lifeless situation in which you find yourself. He will do it for you!
Trust him, pray for forgiveness. Make your petitions known and believe him to do it for you! Dark days have engulfed us all around, but the night of gloom will soon give way to the light of a bright new dawn! Let us work for it to make it come to pass as the Lord wills.
Sunday prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for blessed assurance. I am not afraid, I believe in you to do it for me. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
Babila Fochang.
