“Do The Needful That Is Lawful!”(Lk.14:1-6).
“What manner of Man is Jesus…?” He goes where today we his followers declare as “no go” zones. On a Sabbath he choses to go and eat in the house of “a prominent Pharisee,” where “he was being carefully watched.”
We are told that “there in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. The man was probably placed strategically as a bait to see his reaction. That is why “he was being carefully watched.”
For the Pharisees and experts in the law the man was probably a bait to trap the Lord Jesus Christ, but for the Lord it was an opportunity to disprove their interpretation concerning the Sabbath.
That is why they “remained silent when he asked them, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”
They were silent because there was no backing from the Torah and the prophets to support their false interpretations concerning the Sabbath. Even today, denominational doctrines that lack biblical credence are not intended to lead people on the way of salvation, but rather to satisfy the ego of leaders.
The Lord asked them further if any of them had a child or an ox and it fell in a well on a Sabbath will they not immediately remove it? “And they had nothing to say.” They had nothing to say because the Lord touched their sore spot.
Everything turns around for the good of those whom the LORD favours. If the man with the swollen body was a bait to trap the Lord, it turned out in the man’s favour. Jesus took hold of the man, “healed him and sent his on his way.”
Bottomline ny dear friend: For the sake of the gospel, go even to where your opponents have set traps for you. Run away from man-made doctrines that do not have scriptural backing.
Not minding the oppositions, do the needful that is lawful.
Prayer: Holy Spirit help me to do what is needful and lawful on the Sabbath. Amen!
