“Do Right By Keeping The Royal Law!”
We have reaped lots of benefits from the moral lessons which we received from our parents through the fireside stories. One of such stories with many versions centre “Cinderella like” on the unfavoured child who receives the worst of treatments at home. She does all the rough and demanding tasks, eats stale food while others are eating fresh food, is often starved and sleeps under very uncomfortable conditions.
The big lesson is how such a child grows up to enjoy the best of lives and is kind and generous to those who treated her cruelly. Meanwhile the cherished children turn out wayward, rude and unsuccessful. (I use the present tense because the stories are still being retold and the unfavoured child is still very much around)!
Discriminating against anyone for whatever reason is breaking the royal law of, “Love your neighbour as yourself.” We often select the sins that we condemn, while being very comfortable in commiting the ones we decide are inconsequential.
However, there is no least sin. “If you show favouritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreaker. For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking it all.”
And like we learned in our Cinderella kind stories, what goes around comes around. Those who are not merciful are going to be judged without mercy. “Mercy triumphs over judgment” (Jm.2:8-13). The measure you give is the measure you will receive. “If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered” (Prv.21:13).
My friend, do not discriminate against anyone. You may beat a child and force him not to cry. That child cries all the same, and though the tears flows inward God sees alk the same. That is why the Cinderella type stories always end badly for the favoured and a happy ending for the unfavoured. Remember: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Mt.5:7).
Weekend prayer: Heavenly Father help me to always see your image in everyone with whom I interact in any way. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
