“Do Not Let Your Heart Become Callous!”
In Nollywood movies where the gods are concerned when calamity strikes and people are worried about the silence of the gods, you hear the priests assuring the people, “The gods are wise.”
Every religion attribute wisdom to deity. One main characteristics of such wisdom is that deity often articulate in idioms far above the reach of mere mortals, unless they have freed themselves of callousness.
In ancient times a king was bent on going to war with a neighbouringcountry. He decided to consult an oracle. The oracle told him, “By going to war you will destroy a nation.” The king understood this to mean victory over the neighbouring country. So he went to war with all confidence. He was overpowered and his nation destroyed. He came back seething with anger and went to the oracle to demand an explanation. The oracle told him that it had happened as predicted. He had destroyed a nation – his own nation. He had not reasoned out the words of the oracle because he had a calloused heart.
In his day Jesus spoke in parables to fulfil Isaiah’s prophecy, “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.”
To be calloused is to be hardened, insensitive, indifferent and unsympathetic. A dictionary example of being calloused fits our contemporary homeland, “They have a callous attitude toward the sufferings of others…”
Just look around you and what do you find? It’s not about claiming to be Christian. One way or the other we are indifferent or insensitive to the pain and suffering of others. We are full of vengeance and act it out on others without compunction; no matter how camouflaged we may be! Consider the rising death toll, the scorched earth policy of burning villages with innocent children and pregnant women! The lies and the deceptions, the nonchalance and silence of the good ones all portray callousness of hearts! Are we as blessed as the disciples of old to see and hear what others longed for but didn’t see?(Mtt.13:10-17).
Pray that your heart does not become calloused because you will become insensibly blind and deaf, such that you cannot see and hear Christ the wisdom of God!
Prayer: Lord give me eyes to see, ears to hear and a heart to understand so that I can turn to Christ and be healed. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
